The Titanic - a tragic story
100 years after the Titanic tragedy, the world's most famous ship still fascinates us. This April, discover the legend in the new 3D version of James Cameron's film Titanic.
What was the Titanic?
The Titanic was the largest passenger ship in the world when it was built in 1912 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was like a floating town with passengers from all social classes. Third-class passengers paid $3 to $8 for a one-way ticket to America. First-class passengers paid $30.
Inside the Titanic
The Titanic was a luxury ship. Rich passengers paid $865 for a suite decorated in elegant styles. There was also the famous Grand Staircase, which is in the film Titanic too.
The Titanic's destination
The Titanic's first voyage was from Southampon, in England, to New York City, USA. The ship left on 10 April 1912...but never arrived at her destination.
The tragedy
On 14 April, four days after leaving Southampton, the Titanic was in the North Atlantic. The sea was calm but visibility was low. At 11.40 pm, a lookout saw a large iceberg near the ship. 37 seconds later, the Titanic hit the iceberg and water entered the ship. At first the passengers didn't panic...two hours and 40 minutes later, at 2.20 am, the Titanic sank...
Who died?
Of the 2,224 people on board, only 710 survived: there were not enough lifeboats. Most survivors were women, children and the rich: 60% of first-class passengers survived. But only 42% of second-class and less that 25% of third-class passengers survived.
The last survivor.
The last survivor of the Titanic died in 2009, aged 96. Her name was Millvina Dean and she was two months old when she was rescured from the ship.
Visit the Titanic
Visitors can learn about the Titanic and Belfast at a new visitor centre in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It's a giant building with four wings the shape of Titanic's hull.
Titanic on film
The wreck of Titanic was found in 1985, about 4km under the sea. James Cameron made his 1997 film, Titanic, using real images of the wreck. It was the highestgrossing film of all time until Avatar (2009)

Bob Marey

Bob Marey is a legend around the world. But it was a long journey from the poverty of Jamaica to international success. When he was a boy in the 1950s, Jamaica was still a British colony. It became independent in 1962. The culture was a mix of African traditions and British cusroms, but there were few opportunities for Afro-Jamaicans. One of them was music!

Bob Marey and the Wailers.

No Woman, No Cry.
In 1974, the original Wailers broke up, but Bob Marley continued recording with other musicans and kept the group's name. They had their first UK to 40 hit with the single ''No Woman, No Cry'', in 1975. People everywhere loved reggae.

The legend continues.

Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Prince William and Kate Middlenton met in 2001. Now ten years later, on 29 April, the British public will finally get their royal wedding...

Prince William.
The British have always loved Prince William. His mother, Princess Diana, was adored by the public. She died in 1997. Many people think that William should be the next king of the United Kingdom, not his father, Prince Charles.

Humanitarian prince.
William went to the best schools in Britain and then started to do humanitarian and charity work. He lived and worked for a year in Chile, Belize and Africa. In Chile he taught English in schools. In Belixa he was in the British Armeny and did not get any special treatment. William also worked on a farm in England.

Meeting Kate.
Prince William met Kate Middleton at ST Andrew'a Universtity in Scotland. In their first year, William and Kate lived in the same building. William was unhappy at university and wanted to lave. Kate convinced him to stay, and to change courses, from History of Art to Grography.

Perfect marriage.
Later, Kate and William's friendship* became romantic. But they did not want to marry immediately. The British gave Kate the name "Waity Katie" because she waited for William to ask her to ask her to marry him. Now everyone is happy and agrees that Kate is perfect for the prince!

Kate Middleton.
Royals normally marry nobility. But Kate Middleton is an exception. Kate is from a rich family, but they are not royalty. Some of her ancestors were poor miners and her mother was and air hostess. The British think it is incredible that a "commoner" will marry the future king of the UK.

Millionaire parents.
Kate's parents started selling party accessories on the internet. At first, they used their children as models for their catalogues. They soon became millionaires and were able to pay for Kate to go to the best British schools.

Princess ambitions.
Kate has a reputation for being quiet serious girl. But some of her friends say  she dreamed of being Princess Catherine before she met William! This might be why she chose to study at St Andrews University where she could meet Prince William.
